Submitted for the MAR11 Meeting of The American Physical Society Ab initio calculations of optical absorption spectra: Solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation within density matrix perturbation theory1 DARIO ROCCA, UC Davis, DEYU LU, Brookhaven National Laboratory, HUYVIET NGUYEN, GIULIA GALLI, UC Davis — We present an approach to compute optical absorption spectra from first principles, which is suitable for the study of large systems and gives access to spectra within a wide energy range. In this approach, the quantum Liouville equation is solved iteratively within first order perturbation theory, with a Hamiltonian containing a static self-energy operator [1]. This is equivalent to solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Explicit calculations of single particle excited states and inversion of dielectric matrices are avoided using techniques based on Density Functional Perturbation Theory [1,2]. The calculation and inclusion of GW quasi-particle corrections within this framework are discussed. The efficiency and accuracy of our approach are demonstrated by computing optical spectra of solids, nanostructures and dipeptide molecules exhibiting charge transfer excitations. Halogenated Graphdiyne and Graphyne Single Layers: A Systematic Study
Graphyne and graphdiyne families of flat carbon (sp2/sp) networks with high degrees of π-conjunction are attracting much attention due to their promising electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. In the present investigation we have studied the structural, mechanical, electrical and optical properties of halogenated graphdiyne and graphyne. The optical spectra of pure and halog...
متن کاملAb Initio Calculation of Excitonic Effects in the Optical Spectra of Semiconductors
An ab initio approach to the calculation of excitonic effects in the optical absorption spectra of semiconductors and insulators is formulated. It starts from a quasiparticle band structure calculation and is based on the relevant Bethe-Salpeter equation. An application to bulk silicon shows a substantial improvement with respect to previous calculations in the description of the experimental s...
متن کاملAb initio electronic and optical spectra of free-base porphyrins: The role of electronic correlation.
We present a theoretical investigation of electronic and optical properties of free-base porphyrins based on density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory. The electronic levels of free-base porphine (H(2)P) and its phenyl derivative, free-base tetraphenylporphyrin (H(2)TPP) are calculated using the ab initio GW approximation for the self-energy. The approach is found to yield res...
متن کاملAb-initio study of Electronic, Optical, Dynamic and Thermoelectric properties of CuSbX2 (X=S,Se) compounds
Abstract: In this work we investigate the electronic, optical, dynamic and thermoelectric properties of ternary copper-based Chalcogenides CuSbX2 (X= S, Se) compounds. Calculations are based on density functional theory and the semi-classical Boltzmann theory. Computations have been carried out by using Quantum-Espresso (PWSCF) package and ab-initio pseudo-potential technique. To estimate the e...
متن کاملCalculation of optical absorption spectra of hydrogenated Si clusters: Bethe-Salpeter equation versus time-dependent local-density approximation
We present calculations of the optical absorption spectra of clusters SiH4 , Si10H16 , Si17H36 , Si29H24 , and Si35H36 , as determined from two different methods: the Bethe-Salpeter equation !BSE" with a model dielectric function, and the time-dependent density-functional theory within the adiabatic local-density approximation !TDLDA". Single-particle states are obtained from local-density appr...
